From Cancer to Education

My name is Carrie Wyman.  I am 49 and was first diagnosed three years ago as stage 3A in May 2014.  I was later diagnosed as Stage 4 with metastasis to many nodes in April 2017.  I am NEAD (no evidence of active disease) as of October 13, 2017.

When I was first diagnosed in May of 2014, I thought this was it, the end. I had a 2 year old son and several daughters graduating high school. I have triplets who are now 22 and an older daughter that is 24. I went through all of the breast cancer bullshit.  Chemo, mastectomy, radiation, and reconstruction.  I was diagnosed as triple negative. When I was done, I thought I was cured!!!

Nope , wrong!

This year in April, almost 3 years after my first diagnosis, I found out I was stage IV after having a CT for a benign cyst.  I was expecting it and wasn’t surprised at all . Don’t get me wrong…I was fucking pissed.  I just knew it would come back.

Two years before, I had attended a Die-In in Washington DC.  I obtained this knowledge from Beth Caldwell, the co-founder of METUP.  I had talked to several Stage IV women and learned this could happen to me.

Taking Action

After my stage 4 diagnosis, I knew I had to make a difference and help change the way the media and communities make women and men believe they can be cured. There is NO CURE or perfect treatment.  People go though treatment thinking they’re cured or “cancer free”.  It’s delusion repeated to make people feel better.
So, I joined Living Beyond Breast Cancer and became a  Hear My Voice volunteer.  I will be working my ass off in my community, and anywhere I can, to use my cancer to educate women and men that they need to be proactive about their cancer.  We need to change the way we celebrate with pink and balloons.  We want a cure, but I’d be happy with a long term treatment.
