Hi! I am Safiya Hill, a 39-year-old mom of two amazing kids named SaMya and Michael. I was diagnosed with 3b IDC at the age of 36. I am from Houston, TX, so I received treatment at MD Anderson.
In 2014, I felt a lump and decided to get it checked out. They referred me to the Rose to get my mammogram. They saw what I felt, did the biopsy, and it came back cancerous! My doctors explained my options and I felt they knew more than me so I followed their lead. I had six rounds of chemo plus a year of Herceptin treatments. On my first treatment, I ended up in the hospital because of an infection! After that, they started me with the Neulasta shot to boost my system up.
After I rang the bell, I had a mastectomy on my left breast and had to do physical therapy due to lymphedema. I wanted both breasts gone so during reconstruction they removed the right one and used my tummy to fix me two new breasts. I’ve had one reconstruction and two additional revision surgeries. I also had the 3D nipple tattoos done.
One of the hardest parts was not having control over my life and my kids. I had to ask for a lot of help because at the time my kids were thirteen and seven. It changed my life because it made me view every aspect differently. No more crying over spilled milk or not forgiving others. I’ve learned if you can’t make me happy you surely can’t make me sad! I have been cancer free now since July 2015 and I couldn’t be any happier. I’ve met amazing Pink Sisters and I’m so blessed to be apart of a campaign for Amigen. I plan on empowering women and being a voice for those who feel they don’t have one. I am also back in school and ready to be that difference maker!
For any person that receives this news, my advice to you is seek GOD and truly believe if he brought you to it, he’ll bring you through it! Always stay positive and in a grateful state. My motto is not why me, but why not me! GOD only gives you what he knows you can bear and if he trusts me with that, how can I not trust him with this?
